Do you need help with your CDR? We have decided to make available our experience in writing our own CDRs (and our friend's) to YOU.

If you are of engineering background and your skills assessment requires you to submit a competency demonstration report to Engineer's Australia, and you don't know how to start. Perhaps you have started your preparation and may need someone with an experience to review your work and give recommendations on how to further improve it, then this might just be an opportunity for you.

How to prepare a Competency Demonstration Report

If you are like me, an Electronics Engineer and does not have a recognized qualification, you will need to submit a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR).  Quoted from the skills assessment booklet, A CDR will help you "demonstrate how you have applied your engineering knowledge and skills; that such application meets the
competency standards of the relevant occupational category in Australia."

The details of how to make one and the requirements are found in the booklet, so download it and print for your copy.  However, in this post, I will share the things that I did that will be helpful for you as you prepare your CDR.

Aside from gathering the requirements, the most challenging part is composing the three career episodes.  Each episode is to have between 1000 to 2000 words and all three episodes should contain or emphasize at 1 item in the summary statement (see page 18 of the booklet for Professional Engineer).

To start off with writing your CDR, use pages 33, 34, 35, and 36 as your guide.  Read through each item on those pages and for every requirement, recall an experience while you were in the university and at work that relates to each bullet.  Write as much as you can, you will have enough time to further evaluate them and decide if they are valid or not and deserve to be in your CDR.  Remember, you need as much information as you can to reach the 1000 words limit per episode.

Here are some info about my episodes:
Episode 1 was about a university project.  I chose this project since I have a very profound contribution in it and it highlights my background in electronics design.
Episode 2 was about a reliability project.  I was in my second year as an engineer and was assigned to an unreliable product.  That product led me to a series of 4 projects that highlighted project management, fault analysis, electronics design competence, and capability for team work.
Episode 3 was based on my recent years in engineering.  I have been assigned to numerous products and have had numerous projects as well.  I used this episode to emphasize my combined capability of engineering, business, and project management.

Gathering such information was not too difficult either.  I have kept good amount of information about my daily activities for the past 3 years through a journal and I have maintained a projects repository where all my (you guessed it) projects are kept up to date and organized by dates and status.  So putting them on what episode or engineering requirement was not too difficult at all.  So if you are starting with your CDR, you should get these information ready as well.

Be creative.  My 2nd episode was full of timelines, metrics, and goals that I felt would be easily understood if show it in a graph.  So I did.

Then, start writing that CDR.  Make sure you follow the rules taught in IELTS. Remember, you will be submitting your original IELTS score form.

Another thing that will greatly help and improve your CDR is to ask somebody who can proof read your career episodes.  I had my friend do it for me and another eye and brain to go through your essays will surely improve the presentation and the chronology of events.  Make sure you choose somebody competent to do it with you.

Finally, compile those requirements with your CDR, and don't forget to check a million times that you have everything in the envelope.  Do not bind nor staple, keep everything loosely bound.

I did not cover much, but covered mostly about the writing of the CDR as I found it the most challenging.  However, I welcome questions and inquiries.  I would be happy to help you out to the best of my knowledge.

Remember, share this among your friends, you will surely help those in the same situation as I did.

  2. Hi,
after my graduation in mechanical i worked for 10 months and then i did my master.
If I include my BSc and MSc project in a career episode do I have to certify them from my university teacher.
I will include my 10 months working time in a third career episode.A letter head certificate from the company will be enough to prove my 10months working time.
    I really appreciate your help.
    best regards.

    1. Hello Asad,

As far as career episodes are concerned, you do not need to have those projects or experience certified by your university teacher or anyone.

The letter from your company proving your length of stay with them in a paid occupation is a good record to keep. But take note that within your skills assessment application, a document called work experience has to be accomplished with signature of your human resource and direct manager. Make sure that this letter contains the required information by engineers australia like the position, permanent/temp, period of stay, length of stay, salary, etc. Please don't take my word for it, always go back to the migration skills assessment booklet for complete details about your skills assessment application.

      Cheers

    2. Asad, and Sir John Paul Zante,

I think Asad's 10 month employment duration is yet not enough for his work experience to be assessed by EA. It should be at least three years immediately before he applies for work experience assessment to EA, am i correct?

      Thank you.

    3. You are correct Jep. You have to have atleast 3 years of cumulative professional experience to qualify as a skilled immigrant.

    4. Hi Jep,

I would like to make a correction about the statements I made above, I have reviewed the skilled migration booklet and it does not say that you have to have a minimum number of years of professional work experience to apply for skilled migration. You only get (more) points for your professional experience if you have at least 3 years of professional experience.

  3. Hi Asad,

I believe you don't need to have those projects certified. I did my first episode on a project I did on my last year in the university and I did not submit any proof that certifies it at all. However, if it is a huge project that involves you being paid for doing it, you might as well be better off having it certified as an official/paid project. That experience might as well be counted as part of your professional years of experience. Do note that the more years you have experience, the more points you can obtain for your application.

    Goodluck.

    1. Hello there! thanks for helping out in answering questions posted in this blog. You are correct, once you are paid professionally for work done that is related to the skill/occupation you are applying assessment for, having it certified as part of your work experience is the way to go and will help add more points to your years of experience. The more points the better especially through the new ranking method of SkillSelect.

Which is more advantageous to the applicant, the project with, or without prototype? Ill really appreciate it if you will share with me how you used your undergrad project or task, and what was that task all about. At least ill know which task to use in my CE.

    1. Hello Alyssa,

If you are aiming to have your work experience assessed, I believe you wish to claim for extra points with it. I did not have my work experience assessed, since the total points I have accumulated reached 65. By the way, I am a pre-SkillSelect applicant, so ranking did matter when I lodged my visa application.

Please do not be worried if you missed to have your work experience assessed by EA. They are very considerate as far as my colleague's experience is concerned, they will actually communicate with you and respond timely whenever you have questions about your submitted assessment. Make sure though that for every communication you make with them, always quote your CID in your email's subject so they know who they are working with and which application you are referring to.

I hope I was able to answer your questions.

      Cheers!

skills assessment is the one process that once you receive a positive assessment outcome, will qualify you to lodge an expression of interest. a work experience assessment is a subset of skills assessment where you gain an additional points for your immigration application with a recognized foreign work experience.

i hope i was able to explain it plainly, if not, let me know so i can explain further.

    1. Hello me khan,

I am glad that this blog is able to help you in some way.

The CDR is the essay component of your skills assessment expressing in detail your competencies in a job, project, or a professional experience in a salaried occupation. Without the CDR, your skills assessment application is incomplete.

The three projects can be about anything as long as it covers the required competencies stated by engineers Australia that you are applying against.

Hope I answered your question, let me know if you need further clarification.

    2. Hello JPZ,

thanks for your swift reply and really appreciate your suggestion.

yes i do have one clarification i was said by me agent that i need at least 6 band (each) for skill assessment and 7 band (each) for applying visa until and unless any state sponsor me (i am electronics and communication engineer) .If any state sponsor me i get 5 points. As 7 band each is little difficult i am worried.Could u please explain the exact system

      Best regards

      Delete
    3. Engineers Australia requires you a band score of 6 in each test. for visa application, you will get 20 points if you have a bandscore not lower than 8 and 10 points for a bandscore not lower than 7. you can still lodge a visa if you get lower than 7, but you get no points for that.

      Did I explain it correctly?

To get a good bandscore in IELTS, I suggest that you do an IELTS review with a recognized IELTS review center. Ask your friends who got good scores, they might be able to recommend something for you.

    1. Hi Akeel,

Make sure that anything you write in your episodes should concur with your professional experience. That means, if you site a professional experience in your CDR, you must have a work experience certificate to support it. Otherwise, EA might reject and disapprove your application.

If you have the checklist for your skills assessment for engineers australia, you will need a Work Experience documentation that will show the jobs you have held with duties/responsibilities, period, salary, etc. This will have to be signed by your direct manager and an HR manager. Without this document, your application is incomplete.

I hope I have answered your query.

    3. Hi Akeel,

You are correct, your experience of 10 months is not sufficient to claim points for work experience. You only need 60 points to lodge an EOI, obviously, the more points you have, the sooner you get invited to lodge a visa application.

I have reread the skilled migration booklet and the migration skills assessment booklet and it did not state any minimum years of professional experience to lodge a skills assessment and EOI.

So I believe, if you can get good scores, by that I mean, no band score lower than 8, you will definitely have atleast 60 points to lodge an EOI.

If you review for IELTS and take the review seriously, you will surely get the band score you aim for.

      Cheers, JPZ

Your career episodes should address requirements of the skills you wish to be assessed for relative to your bachelor's degree.

Please take note that an overseas master's degree does not count in Australia's skilled migration program. However, if your projects during master's is closely related to your bachelor's degree, then by all means, you can include that in your cdr. You can also have a read at the competency demonstration booklet about the requirements for career episodes writing. It lists required areas of knowledge and skills for you to show that matches your skill level you apply for.

A CDR (career demonstration report) is a required documentation that will show your engineering competency.

A CPD (continuing professional development) is a document within the CDR that details your extra curricular activities or education in connection with your career or professional background.

Yes you can include any projects during or after your academic year in your career episodes.

the career episode should address as many points mentioned in the summary statement.

they can either just take any information on your experience letter as it is, or they can contact the company you worked with as the letter is required to have company contact information plus the name and information of the person who prepared it.

  37. Hi

I am electronics engineer currently residing in KSA,websites are flooded with immigration infos but unfortunately I don't know where to start from plus I don't wanna go to any agent

1.What is the 1st step to Australian immigration is it to score in IELTS or submit CDR ?

2.Whome to submit CDR ? Engineers Australia

3.Will EA responds to acceptance or rejection of CDR and then I may proceed further with submission of EOI to aus immigration dept

I know I am asking almost similar questions which might have been answered many times but I need a starting guidance.

    1. Hi,

Exactly the case, there are too much information about migration that sometimes do more harm (confusion) than good. They often don't give you information on what to do first as their primary goal is to get you sign a contract and pay a downpayment for a service.

But here, we try to share as much information of our experience, free of charge.

To hopefully answer your questions based on my experience:

      1. IELTS comes first as your skills assessment(with CDR) requires IELTS as part of a requirement.

      2. Yes, Engineers Australia if your skill requires you too. Always refer to the skills list.

      3. EA will absolutely respond with a positive, failed, or rejected application.

      Cheers,
      JPZ

  41. Hi John, I am a civil engineer with 3 years experience. I already did skills assessment in Vetassess nominating Civil Engineering Draftsperson. Unfortunately I got a negative result. According to the outcome letter: my academic qualification equals AQF bachelor's degree, however I need to have a minimum of 12 months experience that is highly relevant in my nominated occupation "WITH IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS". The reason I failed was my 15 months work experience 1 year ago didn't meet their requirements. But my 2 years experience almost 6 years ago received a favorable result. This means that the only reason i failed was i don't have a 12 months work experience in the last 5 years. Now im thinking if Engineers Australia do also consider a minimum of work experience in the last 5 years to qualify. Thank you in advance. Katherine

    1. Hi,

As far as I know, when I asked EA about the assessments, it is done against your bachelor's degree. they will only assess your work experience if you need to acquire additional points from it. other than that, i believe, your bachelor's degree and some engineering experience might do.

it wouild also help you answer many questions about engineer's australia and its assessment process, download the engineer's australia handbook.

      http://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/sites/default/files/shado/About%20Us/Migration%20Skills%20Assessment/msa_booklet_november.pdf

      hope that helps.

To quote a line from the migration skills assessment handbook " It is recommended that each narrative be a minimum of about1 500 words and a maximum of about 2500 words."

I am a Civil Engineer with 7 years experience
My question about the career episodes is : Do I need to mention a situation / a task assigned to me and my engineering solution / reaction towards it .. if so I feel that 1500 words is too much
Or, it is ok to mention more than a situation within one episode ??

    Thanks

    1. Hi Yousef,

To answer your question, yes you have to. The migration skills assessment handbook offers a good guide on how and what to write in your career episodes. I suggest you read through the handbook as it will give you a good start.

As much as possible, a minimum of 1500 words is required. I even started to write an episode with 2000 words. My tip is, write a draft first of all your experiences, then choose what makes sense for an episode, then develop your thoughts. I tell you, once you start that way, you will have a hard time trimming it down to 1500 words.

If you didn't do well in your previous job, I think you have to find a way to make it sound like you did your best even if it did not turn out well. What EA is concerned I believe is how you demonstrated your engineering knowledge and expertise. Regardless of the outcome, try to sound like you were responsible with a project or a task and that you did your best regardless of the outcome.

But i am working for a software firm with the designation as System Engineer since 3.7 years. Can i show this experience in my assessment report or points test? or is it like we can show work experience only if we have worked in the field which relates to the degree we have done.
So in that case, will 3.7 years be considered as a waste and will I be questions as to where i had spent 3.7 years if I was not working. Also, CDR report has to have the 3 career episodes related to work done in degree only and not the work experience in my case?
