Skilled employment
You will be awarded points for employment in a skilled occupation, gained over the past ten years either in Australia or overseas. To claim points for skilled employment, the experience that you claim must be in your nominated occupation, or in a closely related occupation. You can claim points for both Australian skilled employment and overseas skilled employment and this may be from a combination of both Australian and overseas employment experience provided it was undertaken in the last 10 years. The maximum number of points that can be awarded for Australian or overseas employment experience or combinations of both is 20 points.
Points awarded
Overseas skilled employment in your nominated occupation or a closely related occupation.Points | Length of employment |
---|---|
5 | Three years |
10 | Five years |
15 | Eight years |
This means that the recent changes in points test will no longer give us the 60 points should our skill be in the SOL list as the passing score has been brought down to 65. However, we can claim points for the number of years experience we have had on our nominated skill.

If you have an engineering background, most likely, Engineers Australia will be the assessing body for your skills and qualifications.
The most important and relevant information for us from this website is the Migration Skills Assessment page. It shows the fee for the CDR (Competency Demonstration Report) and the application process and forms.
The Migration Skills Assessment Booklet will be your ultimate guide while preparing for the skills assessment. I have found it helpful to have the booklet printed out and bound.
The Career Planning and Advice page can help you think and plan ahead your engineering career in Australia.
